Fireonlines Guide to ensuring that you are not getting your fingers burnt on servicing costs. Fireonline have been servicing Fire Extinguishers for over 20 years. Follow this guide to make sure that you know what to expect from your next service visit.
How Often? Fire Extinguishers only need to be serviced once a year, by a company that provides maintenance that complies with BS5306: Part 3: 2000
How Much? Typical cost should be no more than £20.00 for the first extinguisher and £2.00 for each subsequent one. You may also pay a small call out fee.
Beware the hidden extras! Small parts such as "o" rings; pins, tamper tags and seals should normally be included within the initial service cost. You could find your bill doubling when you find out that a company wants to charge you extra for these.
Test Discharge: This is a 5 or 10 year requirement on all extinguishers and is calculated from the year of manufacture. Costs should be in the region of £15-£40.00 for this service.
Condemned Equipment: Should a fire extinguisher be condemned, ask the engineers to show you exactly why. Water based extinguishers can erode internally after a number of years (10-20) and may need to be replaced. Cracked, dented or corroded extinguishers or cracked or lifted linings, would also mean the unit is condemned as it would be dangerous to use. If you are not convinced, get a second opinion, the fault should be visibly obvious if pointed out by a qualified engineer.
Fire Log Book: An additional point for your own consideration is that you should nominated a responsible person within your organisation to conduct monthly visual inspections of extinguishers in accordance with BS 5306:PART3:2000 and record the results in a Fire Log Book.
