Types of Fire Extinguishers~Water Fire Extinguishers (Buy)

Water Fire Extinguishers are suitable for most Class A fires, caused by the combustion of materials such as wood, straw, textiles, paper, coal etc. but remember they must NEVER be used on fires involving flammable liquids or electrical equipment as: -

It works by having a rapid cooling effect, so that insufficient heat remains to sustain burning and continuous ignition ceases.CO2 Fire Extinguishers are suitable for Class B & C fires involving flammable liquids and for electrical risks, due to its non-damaging very effective performance.

C02 Fire Extinguishers (Buy)

CO2 is harmless to electrical equipment and materials, so it is ideal for electronic risks such as computers, fax, switch gear, vehicle protection etc. and fires caused by the combustion of liquids such as, petrol oils, fats, spirits or solvents.

Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers (Buy)

Standard or Multi-Purpose Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers are safe to use on most kinds of fire, (Class A, B & C).E.g. Fires caused by petrol, oil, fat, paint, solvents, grease, propane, butane and natural gas, as well as electrical equipment.

The effect of the powder is to "knock down" the flames and it is best for fires involving flammable liquids or gases. Standard powders work well only on burning liquids, however the multi-purpose type is more effective on other types of fire, especially on burning solids.

Fire Extinguisher Certificate & Service Label
When buying brand new fire extinguishers, they will require a service inspection and service label to show the date of purchase and manufacture. Also you will need a Certificate of Inspection to show that this work has been carried out. You can either buy these now, or call out a local Extinguisher company to do this for you. This will normally incur a call out fee in the region of £20-£40 though.
